The EU could “respond swiftly and decisively” in response to what it deems “unjustified” travel bans imposed by the US against five European individuals working on combating digital hatred and disinformation, an EU official has said.
European Leaders Condemn US Move as ‘Coercion’
European leaders such as Emmanuel Macron charged the US administration of “bullying and threats”, following the travel bans targeted individuals that were central to campaigns to enact laws regulating US-based technology firms.
“For too long, European activists have led organised efforts to pressure American platforms to punish American viewpoints they disagree with,” stated the US secretary of state in a social media post. “The current administration will not stand for these egregious acts of censorship beyond its borders.”
Widespread Condemnation Across Europe
Nations including Germany, Spain, and the UK, alongside numerous EU representatives supported the French president in condemning the move.
The bans were enacted on Tuesday on an ex-European commissioner who helped draft the EU’s digital governance law, along with several anti-disinformation campaigners, from Germany and the United Kingdom.
An Escalating Conflict Regarding Governance
The DSA is viewed by Washington as a type of speech restriction, whereas EU authorities argue the rules are essential to combat inflammatory language and falsehoods.
This row threatens to become a facet of a far wider existing cultural and political conflict between the current US administration and Europe.
